Two years ago I learned:

  • 1 in 5 girls will be sexually assaulted while at college

  • 68% don’t report the crime

  • Boys are assaulted too

The stats for sexual assault in high school aren’t good either:

  • Approximately 1 in 5 female high school students report being physically and/or sexually abused by a dating partner

And, in my small community:

  • In 2014 there were 123 sexual assault cases reported, up 15% from the previous year

I couldn’t believe what I was learning. I couldn’t believe no one was talking to students about this. I felt compelled to share what I had learned to educate and to help prevent. That led to the creation of EMPOWERU, my community action program that takes on issues important to high school students, like sexual assault. I’ve put together some impactful events that have reached high school students throughout my county.

All of my research led me to Stop Sexual Assault In Schools (SSAIS.org). They are leading this national movement to end sexual assault. Won’t you join us? Your first step: Visit SSAIS.org to view the many free resources they offer students, families, and school administrators to educate about a student’s Title IX right to an education free from sexual harassment and violence. SSAIS.org identifies resources for survivors, makes the reporting process simple, provides sample complaints, and empowers through its engaging toolkit programs. Help us bring an end to sexual assault.
