Students Speak Out After Watching It Happened Here

minnahstein

When I learned the statistics that 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 16 boys will be sexually assaulted while at college and that these same stats apply to high school students, I knew I had to do something to help. So, two years ago I formed EMPOWERU to take on issues important to teens, like sexual assault. I’ve worked very hard to raise awareness and provide sexual assault education throughout the high schools in my county. And, for the past year I’ve been on the advisory board of Stop Sexual Assault In Schools, taking on K-12 sexual assault nationwide. My latest initiative was the screening of the sexual assault documentary It Happened Here at all of the high schools in my county. In its inaugural year, over 1,000 students participated! That felt pretty good! Next year, I hope to have even more students in attendance.

When I initially set out to do screenings of the documentary, I did it because I wanted others to learn what I had about the real risks of sexual assault that we all face. I didn’t expect to learn so much along the way. Here are two videos I made that share the experience from my perspective as well as some of the students who participated.
