SARASOTA, FL – Minnah Stein, sophomore at Pine View School and Founder of Empower U (a student action group), has been named to the advisory board of the national non-profit Stop Sexual Assault In Schools (SSAIS). Stein has formed a strong and passionate community activism voice that captured the attention of SSAIS. “We value connecting with grass roots advocates like Minnah across the nation. She is passionate about the cause and is doing great work to bring about change,” shared SSAIS founder, Esther Warkov. “We support change wherever it is happening until change happens everywhere. We are thrilled to welcome Minnah to our advisory board and can’t wait to see her work for our shared mission.”
The SSAIS sexual assault prevention programs, trainings, and youth engagement programs are designed for students, families, organizations, and schools anywhere in the U.S. “I am so honored to be working with SSAIS,” said Stein. “They are bringing a national voice to a problem that has been silenced for too long. By starting the conversation in schools, students can understand the risks of sexual assault and how to stay safe as well as their rights. And, victims will know they are not alone.” Stein will be working with SSAIS on national school outreach initiatives as well as promotional material designs.
In 2014 Stein formed EMPOWERU, a program designed to provide the education, resources, and tools to get high school students to take a stand and take action on issues important to them – like sexual assault. She launched EMPOWERU with a weeklong pledge drive, encouraging high school students countywide to take a pledge against sexual assault. With the help of her school Ambassadors and Community Youth Development, over 200 students throughout Sarasota County took the pledge. Her efforts were awarded the Global Youth Service Day grant. And, she has been hard at work trying to launch a new countywide sexual assault initiative for April 2016, which is national sexual assault awareness month. At the time of printing, those plans were not confirmed, so no further details are available yet. (Minnah has also designed four other upcoming community events that tackle important issues.
