I was recently asked by Luz Corcuera, the Executive Director of UnidosNow, to come speak to her Future Leaders high school members who were doing a special day-long program at New College of Florida. UnidosNow was formed to represent the integration needs of the region’s fastest-growing and most under-represented demographic to elevate the quality of life of the growing Hispanic/Latino community through education, integration, and civic engagement.

UnidosNow is an amazing organization doing amazing work. I was honored that Luz thought of me. I didn’t hesitate to accept the invitation. It was the perfect opportunity for me to do another screening of It Happened Here, a documentary that explores sexual assault on college campuses through the personal testimonials of five survivors who transform their experiences into a springboard for change.

Since these students will hopefully be heading off to college in the near future, the timing was perfect. There were about 50 students in attendance. They intently watched the video and asked really great questions afterward. I have done many screenings of It Happened Here to high school students – thanks to the generosity of the film’s producer Marjorie Schwartz Nielsen. I see how It Happened Here educates students about the facts of sexual assault and their Title IX rights. I think it should be required viewing for all high school students. I was so happy to be able to share it with the UnidosNow students. I know they got a lot out of the screening. That feels really good!
